Amped Advantage is an Electric Muscle Stimulation (or EMS) fitness studio located in downtown Calgary. Powered by XBody World, we are the cutting edge of fitness and the only full body Electric Muscle Stimulation in Alberta.

Bringing fast, easy, effective results to everyone from couch potatoes to elite athletes all without worrying about impact or injury.

The electrodes are placed on the body, directly over each major muscle group, so all the impulses reach their target. It’s easy, safe and you can’t go wrong.

Full-body EMS strength training combined with cardio sessions can help you get your muscles toned, burn fat and reduce cellulite. Circulation of the muscular and connective tissues will be enhanced which can lead to firmer and more toned skin as well.

Using EMS can help improve your posture, as the special training programs contain exercises for the back, the lower back, the abs and even the shoulders.

Unlike regular training with weights, EMS Training will not put additional pressure on your joints and with the help of a specialist, it can be used after an injury or with joint pain as well.

EMS can also be used if there are muscular imbalances or underdeveloped muscles in the body. Targeting the appropriate muscle groups is easy with the professional placement of the electrodes in the specialized XBody training suit.

“Time is money” as the old saying goes, and it is especially relevant in today’s busy world. With EMS you can achieve the results of a 90-minute training in just 20 minutes, including strengthening and cardio sessions according to your preference.

Brooke Galonski and Joshua Landry

I heard about Amped Advantage through word of mouth from “the buzz” that it’s created in Calgary regarding EMS Xbody training. My boyfriend and I are active in sport (we don’t love the gym) so with winter coming we hesitantly gave it a try because why not…we aren’t as busy in the winter and the Starter Pack prices were affordable for new customers.

All it took was 5 minutes through our first session to become COMPLETELY addicted to this style of exercise. It is unique, creative and incredibly efficient! The impulse was strange at first; it made me giggle a bit not because it tickled but because it was such a different sensation. You can feel each muscle fiber activated with a buzzing feeling as your muscles are working and then you quickly learn how to use that impulse to assist your movements. It’s undeniably a physically demanding workout, after every session we learned fatigue in places we didn’t know muscles existed; although the nice thing about EMS Xbody training is that you can breathe easily and push yourself through the session, it never feels impossible to finish which is 100%  encouraging for people who dislike the gym! Kalyn is amazing at figuring out what you can handle and when you need motivating.

Every session we learn multiple new exercises so we have never been bored while at an Amped Advantage workout. The three different machine settings also help to keep the workouts interesting, of course, our favorite is the relaxation mode which helps get rid of stretch marks and scar tissue! We have had tons of friends give it a try because we’ve been raving about it for so long; even my mom tried it and loved it so much she wanted to visit Calgary more often just to workout with me! I also love that it is something my boyfriend and I can do together and both found benefits in different areas of our lives. He found his physical labor job to be easier on his body and it helped me strongly cross the finish line of a half marathon! We both love Amped Advantage and always look forward to our next session, which is totally rare for us with exercise. We’ve never felt so thoroughly worked out and healthy and it only took a month of 2 sessions per week to feel this way. We can’t say enough positive things about Amped Advantage; we are totally hooked and can’t get enough!!

Thanks so much Kalyn, can’t wait for the next sweat!!

Over the years my body weight and self-confidence have fluctuated heavily. From putting on 55 pounds to losing 85, and everything in between. I’ve trained with multiple trainers and multiple styles (powerlifting, GVM, DTP, HIIT, sports, etc) but have never been incredibly happy with the results.

After hearing about Amped Advantage and the Xbody system, I became very curious to see what all the hype was about. I spent two weeks in Calgary trying Amped Advantage with Kalyn and was blown away. Not only are the workouts difficult but they are concise, saving you an incredible amount of time. You work at your own level and get what you put into it. So while Kalyn leads your workout, you determine your own grind. As well as the ability to focus more on targeted areas using the electric muscle stimulation. The EMS makes you feel like your entire body is engaged in every exercise so you can feel how hard you’re working. As well as you can target specific areas you really want to focus on. The muscle soreness next day is quite unique as well. I never found myself broken, or too tender, never unmotivated to be active, however, you still feel like you crushed any PR the day before!

After two weeks with Kalyn, I felt confident in my body, which is something I’ve never really felt before. After two weeks I felt healthier, I looked significantly nicer, and I regained an appetite I’ve been missing for years. After only two weeks I felt like I was on my way to achieving what I’ve always wanted. Which is why I intend to plan the entirety of 2018 with Amped Advantage and Kalyn, pushing myself to new limits.

What is EMS training?

EMS stands for Electric Muscle Stimulation. Technically, EMS is a total body workout using voluntary movements assisted by involuntary electrical stimulation. Our muscles contract through electric impulses (bioelectronics) in normal state, the EMS training makes use of this effect. By employing controllable external electro impulses, the natural effect is additionally intensified and an ultra-effective training can be achieved.

What are the benefits of EMS?

EMS training is in gyms, wellness and beauty centers, as well as in competitive sport, rehabilitation and medicine. Elite athletes use EMS in addition to their training in order to improve their strength and speed. Physical therapists make use of EMS for joint-sparing muscle formation and for targeted back exercises. Personal trainers, gyms and beauty centers use EMS to concentrate on the fitness and beauty aspects: body shaping through muscle formation and catabolism of fat, stimulation of metabolism and tightening of connective tissue.

Can you do EMS training in the long term?

Yes. You should always workout in long term and as regularly as with conventional training. The strength of the muscles can only be maintained by training regularly. If you do not exercise over an extended period of time, the muscles will be reduced to the original status. Just like with conventional strength training.

Why is the EMS training much more effective than conventional weight training?

The EMS full-body workout activates over 90% of the muscles fibers at the same time during each contraction compared to conventional weight training using around 50%. EMS devices externally replicate our bodies natural electric impulses to the muscle, however because EMS is a controlled impulse we can activate slow-twitch fibers, fast-twitch fibers and deep muscle tissue layers all at the same time! Therefore, EMS training produces an effect up to 30x more quickly and effectively than conventional weight training.

How much time can I save with EMS?

Leisure time is valuable – too valuable to spend it with time-consuming and ineffective training sessions. Amped Advantage combines the aspect of time saving without any compromises, only two 20-minute training sessions a week is sufficient for your conventional 3x/week for 1-2 hours in the gym. EMS will have you feeling more success in just a few weeks. I know at first the figures seem unbelievable but EMS training is backed by solid scientific research and after you experience the method for yourself you will certainly believe it too!

What benefits does the EMS full-body workout offer?

While the muscle works, the affected area is intensively stimulated. The increased blood flow has a positive effect on the skin, the body is toned and cellulite can be reduced effectively. After the training, you will feel energized and refreshed. EMS training also improves the physical performance: you feel more flexible, stronger, healthier, and you tire less quickly. Compared to conventional training, EMS offers the advantages of an intense workout in much less time.

Is quick muscle growth possible with EMS?

Yes. You can achieve maximum success with EMS training that cannot be achieved with conventional training in such short time because many muscle groups are used at the same time and the joints are spared. Muscles growth (hypertrophy) is quicker to achieve due to the higher levels of human growth hormones produced during the session (up to 3x as much HGH is produced in 20 mins than 2 hours of conventional training). It is important to know that the hormone level is essential: training males build up muscles (hormone: testosterone) and training females tighten muscles (hormone: estrogen).

Can I lose weight with EMS?

Yes. In the first phase of the training, you will lose centimeters and in the second phase, fat deposits are attacked. You will also burn more calories in everyday life because of the increased muscle activity, which means that the energy consumption increases. Thus, the training success is amplified and in addition girth and weight are reduced. EMS training is a perfect complement to a dietary change in order to support weight- and girth loss effectively.

When can I see results?

You already feel vitalized after the first training session. Visible success, such as a better posture and toned arms usually shows within few training sessions. Girth loss, power increase and improvement of your skin’s appearance will permanently be measurable or visible within four or six weeks – of course always depending on the physical condition at the beginning of the training and nutritional behavior. We recommend one to two 20-minute training sessions a week at the most.

Is EMS training for everyone?

EMS is (generally speaking) suitable for most people. Everyone from couch potatoes to elite athletes can benefit from EMS training. However there are a few contraindicating health issues:

If you have a pacemaker or are pregnant you should not participate in EMS training.

Other contraindications are:

  • Inguinal hernia
  • Tumors
  • Tuberculosis
  • Advanced arteriosclerosis
  • Severe neurological disorders
  • Acute bacterial or viral infections, or fever
  • Abdominal wall injury hernia
  • Hemophilia
  • Severe or arterial circulatory disorder
  • Kidney issues

Consult your doctor if you suffer from any of the above conditions to receive medical approval before starting your Amped Advantage EMS personal training program.

Is stimulation current dangerous?

No. Training or therapy using low-frequency current stimulation is not dangerous. Why? Our muscles work constantly. During this process, small intrinsic electric pulses initiate every movement. During the training with current stimulation, this pulse is simply fortified by the additional pulse from outside. Therefore, the impulse does not seem foreign to the body.

Does the electric current have any side effects?

No, according to official studies, there are absolutely no negative side effects for sport-healthy humans. On the contrary, there are a lot of positive studies.  Electro treatments are also a recognized part of classical techniques in physiotherapy since the 1950s.

Can this electric current harm my heart?

No. The low-frequency impulse exclusively activates the skeletal muscles. Organs and the heart are not reached.

What should I do before the workout?

You should drink lots of water and have lots of energy for your session. Bring a water bottle, towel and your gym shoes. You will be supplied an outfit to wear for the first workout and then you can choose to rent or buy your own for continuing training.

What should I expect after the workout?

It is common to experience muscle fatigue immediately after the session and a soreness that lasts from 24 to 48 hours (usually peaking at 48 hours)

How can I help aid in recovery?

We recommend light cardio exercises with lots of warm up. Ensure you drink plenty of water and up your normal protein and healthy fats intake. Also reducing sugar is a good idea because sugar causes inflammation which will make the soreness more intense.  Also aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep to aid in proper recovery.
